Clemence, Judith L.*
Clemence, Judith L. age 97; of St. Clair; passed away March 18, 2017. Judy was born December 9, 1918. She was preceded in death by her husband Lee and daughter Sandra Rise. She is survived by her sister Nancy Tate, of Oceanside, CA; her granddaughter Jennifer L. Rise, DO; and great grandchildren, Tristian and Ian, all of St. Clair, MI. Judy was the Women's Editor for the Oakland Press {then Pontiac Press} in the 1950s, moving on to the Flint Journal as the Women's Editor in the 1960s, and finally as the Lifestyle Editor and Society Editor of the Palm Beach Post in Palm Beach, FL. She retired from the Palm Beach Social Pictorial Magazine in the 1990s. She interviewed many politicians, actors, fashion designers, astronauts, and local people of interest. She famously interviewed Eleanor Roosevelt for the Pontiac Press, and was proud to be on the front page, rare for a Women's page writer at the time. She travelled to movie premiers in Hollywood and NYC (her favorite was the Russian themed party and premier for Doctor Zhivago). She also covered fashion week in NYC, Los Angeles, and in 1965, travelled to London's Carnaby Street to interview the first designer of the mini skirt, Mary Quant. Favorite articles included meeting Clark Gable on the set of Run Silent, Run Deep, Ginger Rodgers, and a tour of Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks' home PickFair, before it was demolished. Judy and Lee loved music and dancing to the big band orchestras of the day. Judy always returned to Michigan for the summers, where she was raised near her beloved Huckleberry swamps of Flint, and to sunsets on Silver Lake in Waterford, where she was often heard to say "Aren't we Lucky". Cremation arrangements by Young Funeral Home, China Twp., MI.
